MSG(Monosodium glutamate or wei jin) Overdose
.
Has anyone felt unwell after eating/drinking maybe.. a bowl fishball soup? or the fake sharksfins soup that some restaurants serve?
.
Well I have, on at least three occasions already and it's pretty scary. Papa has experienced it before, and we both think it's most probably 'cause of the msg. So what we feel is this weird sort of pain in our backs. It's not exactly an ache, but a very 酸 irritating sensation.
.
KC and i decided to go to the Jurong West Hawker centre to have dinner today, 'cause i read on Ladyironchef that it was voted the best hawker centre before. True enough there was a long queue for the fish porridge and wan tan mee. We shared a bowl of sliced fish soup, and i had fishball noodles. Both the soups were very nice and saltish, but before i even ate half my food my back started feeling weird :( Awful feeling.
.
So anyway, i researched abit about msg overdose. There's not much, but here're some symptoms that are said to be related to msg:
.
MSG has been used as a food additive for decades. Over the years, the FDA has received many anecdotal reports of adverse reactions to foods containing MSG. These reactions — known as MSG symptom complex — include:
.
Headache
Flushing
Sweating
Facial pressure or tightness
Numbness, tingling or burning in face, neck and other areas
Rapid, fluttering heartbeats (heart palpitations)
Chest pain
Nausea
Weakness
However, researchers have found no definitive evidence of a link between MSG and these symptoms. Researchers acknowledge, though, that a small percentage of people may have short-term reactions to MSG. Symptoms are usually mild and don't require treatment. The only way to prevent a reaction is to avoid foods containing MSG.
.
I guess the symptoms i get are closest to the numbness, tingling in the neck and other areas, and a bit of weakness.
.
But having said so much, i still love fishball noodles (and the soup), so i won't stop eating fishball noodles. Just stop whenever the symptoms come in, and drink more water i guess!
